Recycling Electronics

September 1, 2010

Most of us know that e-waste has become a global problem. Shiploads of discarded electronics, many containing lead and other hazardous toxins, are dumped in landfills in countries like China and India. So what are we to do when our electronics break and aren’t worth the repair cost? Or we decide to upgrade our computer, phone, or other electronic device for a newer, more efficient model?

Responsible electronic disposal is getting easier as communities provide e-cycling programs, and companies like Best Buy, Sony, and Staples offer donation and recycling programs for electronics. The best first action is to see if donation and reuse is possible, even if the device isn’t operational. If it’s a lost cause and cannot be reused, recycling is the next best approach.

Find donation and recycling opportunities on the EPA’s web site or go straight to Earth911.com.
