The Seasonal Closet Clearing

September 8, 2010

We all have emotional attachments to our possessions, whether we use them or not. Learning to evaluate and let go of unused items makes it easier to find things you do use. And, it makes room for new things to come.

Each season, survey your closets, drawers, and other storage areas. If you have not worn or used an item once in the last six months, ask yourself if you plan to wear it in the next six months. Be brutally honest—and if the answer is no, place it in a shopping bag to be donated. If your storage areas still feel crowded, place your off-season clothes and seasonal items in space-saving bags or appropriate bins, then store elsewhere until they are needed.

Challenge yourself to fill at least one bag very six months. If you feel overwhelmed, give yourself some parameters—choose a single closet to clear, or even just one drawer to organize. Even give yourself a 30-minute limit and set a timer. This is an ongoing process and there’s no reason you have to spend your whole day organizing. These quick clearing sessions have a cumulative effect. Keep it up and soon you’ll  find what you’re looking for quickly and easily. If you need help getting started, contact us and Clear will be there.
